Description
This is the sort of South African music that’s hard to resist: lively rhythms, great guitar playing, and joyous singing combine to make an irresistible package. Actually, the title of this package is a bit misleading. The Mahotella Queens were a talented trio, but they also had a talented backup band, Makgona Tsothle, and above all, the secret ingredient that made them so memorable; the distinctively gruff vocals of Mahlathini, the man they called the “Lion of Soweto.” So really, this should have been titled the best of Mahlathini & the Mahotella Queens. But under any name this is infectious, outstanding music, culled from recordings made in the 1970s and 1980s.
