The songs are lovely and soulful – unique to Portugal. Fado is about fate, destiny, a longing for one’s homeland when the sailors were at sea for so many months from the days gone by. Most musical accompaniment is with guitar, or a very, very light orchestra or wind instrument. Some of the songs are lively, but most are beautiful melodic yearnings – very peaceful to listen to, and impossible to compare o other types of folk music.
