I was given this cd by a friend who lives in Portugal and not only did I fall in love with it from the first time I heard it, so did several of my friends; I’ve been ferrying copies back from Lisbon ever since. Paredes’ guitar playing features strong rhythms and a ringing tone; I think Paredes himself composed the pieces on this album (the liner notes are in Portuguese), but many seem to be rooted in traditional material, not slavishly “authentic” but informed by the spirit of Portuguese music.
